Jeudevine Memorial Library

Hardwick Area Chamber of Commerce photo of the Jeudevine Library in Hardwick, VermontThe elegant Jeudevine Memorial Library was one of the finest works of Vermont architect, Lambert Packard who also designed the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury and the Billings Museum at UVM. The style is Richardsonian Romanesque built with dark brownstone from the quarries of Libby, Massachusetts. Only its foundation is made from the local granite stone of the Woodbury quarries.

Malvina Jeudevine gave the town of Hardwick $20,000 to build the library as a memorial to her husband, Alden and son, Cornelius, who were both deceased. It was dedicated in 1897.

The inside is as lovely as the outside with golden-oak woodwork and nine stained-glass windows. It has a slate roof and two distinctive eye-brow windows.

Though it has a Victorian flare, it is now up-to-date with Internet connections for the public.
