In addition to the paid departments described above, there are several volunteer groups and boards that oversee the town. There is a 5 member electric commission that is responsible for Hardwick's electric department. They employ a general manager to handle the day to day operations of electric productions and distribution. The volunteer fire department has approximately 25 members and provides coverage to both Hardwick and the surrounding towns through a mutual aid agreement with those towns. There is a Planning/Zoning Board consisting of 7 people who are charged with helping to shape the town's growth patterns. We have a Recreation Committee that organizes a number of programs and events during the year. Some of these are swimming lessons, visits from Santa Claus and youth dances. There are a number of other individuals and boards that donate their time and expertise to keep Hardwick a community that is governed by a democracy at its most basic level. |

Hardwick is governed by the town
manager form of government. There is a five member Select Board that
sets policy and oversees the activities of the Town. The Select
Board also hires a town manager who directs the activities of the Public
Works Department, the Police Department and provides general
administration for the town.
